Young Defence Scientists Programme (World of Science Modules 2020)
Dear Sec 4s,
You are invited to apply for the Young Defence Scientists Programme (World of Science Modules 2020).
A total of 7 exciting WOS enrichment modules are offered this year! To help you better understand the fun and enriching WOS modules, the organiser prepared a short video which presents the highlights of WOS 2019. More details of the modules can be found in the attached WOS Synopsis 2020.
The WOS modules are open to IP4 (the equivalent of Sec 4) & IP5 (the equivalent of JC1) students, with a strong interest in Physics, Mathematics and Information Technology, and are able to commit their time fully.
A Certificate of Participation will be given to students who achieve 100% attendance for the modules. Please note that students may select up to three modules according to their preference. If selected, they will only attend ONE module.
Please note that WOS 2020 is only to Singaporeans.
Interested applicants who are able to fully commit may fill up an application form at https://forms.gle/vrCF1sfCLmsbqD5j9
The application will close on 7 Feb 2020. Places are limited.
Late applications will not be entertained.

Overview of Conduct of Physics Practical Exams (as briefed):
- The Physics Practical Exam paper may have 3 to 4 questions in Sections A and B.
-
- One question usually involves Electricity, while other questions may be based on any other topics.
- Each bench has 2 students with 2 different sets of apparatus – one for Section A question(s), and one for Section B question(s).
Listen carefully and follow instructions strictly as given by the invigilator!
– First 55 min: One student will start with Section A question(s) and the other student will start with Section B question(s).
Ensure all measurements/observations using the apparatus provided are completed for each section within the given 55 min.
– Changeover (timing is stopped): Each student will rearrange apparatus back to its original state and bring all their materials to the other side of the bench when invigilator gives the instructions.
– Second 55 min: Each student on the new side of the bench will now start with the other Section’s question(s). No returning to the original side of the bench is allowed. Only start when instructions is given.
INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES (on Physics Practical Exam Paper cover)
You will be allowed to work with the apparatus for no more than 55 minutes for each section.
You are expected to record all your observations as soon as these observations are made.
All your answers should be written in the answer sheet in permanent ink; scrap paper should not be used. You may use a pencil for any diagrams or graphs.
At the end of the examination, hand in this Question Booklet.

Arduino Project
Propose an Arduino Project that you can undertake over ~8 lessons.
Your project should make use of Inputs and Outputs on the Arduino.
There are many standard components in the Physics Lab. However, small components that we do not have in school can be purchased for you. Try to give Mr Shone a list of any additional components that you may need by end of April.
Some ideas for Arduino projects could be:
-
- A remote controlled car/robot
- A moving robot arm
- A device to measure something (temperature, distance, pressure)
- A game
- Display of some useful information
- A balancing 2 wheeled robot
- Persistence of vision effect
- Automation (or warning device) for the home or school
- Decoration or Display (LEDs)
