How to Revise for Your Physics End-of-Year Exam

Physics revision is not mainly about memorising your notes. You need to be able to understand the physics, recall important facts and equations, and apply what you know to unfamiliar situations.

The best way to prepare is to do Physics, not just read Physics.

1. Start by knowing what you need to know

Use your syllabus, notes and revision checklist to identify all the topics that may be tested.

For each topic, ask yourself:

    • Do I understand the main ideas?
    • Can I recall and explain the important definitions?
    • Do I know the equations and what each quantity means?
    • Can I use the equations without looking at my notes?
    • Can I answer calculation questions?
    • Can I explain the physics clearly in words?
    • Can I interpret graphs, diagrams and experimental results?

Mark topics that you are less confident about and spend more time on these.

2. Don’t just read your notes

Reading through your notes can make you feel as though you know the material because everything looks familiar. Unfortunately, recognising something is much easier than recalling it in an exam.

Instead, use active recall.

Close your notes and try to:

    • write down everything you remember about a topic;
    • draw and label an important diagram;
    • state a definition accurately;
    • write down the equations you need;
    • explain a concept aloud without looking at your notes.

Then check what you wrote against your notes.

Anything you missed is something you need to revise again.

3. Practise questions — lots of them

This is probably the most important part of your Physics revision.

Once you have reviewed a topic, attempt questions without referring to your notes or answers.

Start with questions on individual topics and then move on to complete examination papers.

When you get a question wrong, don’t just look at the answer and move on. Work out why you got it wrong.

Was it because you:

    • didn’t understand the Physics?
    • forgot an equation or definition?
    • misunderstood the question?
    • made an algebra or calculator error?
    • forgot a unit?
    • didn’t give enough detail in an explanation?
    • knew the idea but couldn’t express it clearly?

Correct the question and try a similar question later.

Your mistakes are one of your best revision resources.

4. Learn how to answer calculation questions properly

For calculation questions, get into the habit of showing your working clearly.

A good approach is:

Equation → Substitution → Answer → Unit

For example:

v = \frac{s}{t}

v = \frac{120}{15}

v = 8.0\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}

Don’t jump straight to an answer from your calculator.

Also check:

    • Have you converted quantities into the correct units?
    • Is your answer a sensible size?
    • Have you included the correct unit?
    • Have you given an appropriate number of significant figures?

5. Pay attention to definitions and Physics vocabulary

Physics uses words very precisely.

Make sure you can give accurate definitions of important quantities and concepts. Avoid learning definitions approximately and hoping that you can reconstruct them during the exam.

Be particularly careful with pairs of ideas that are easily confused, such as:

    • mass and weight;
    • speed and velocity;
    • distance and displacement;
    • energy and power;
    • current and potential difference.

You should understand the difference, not simply memorise two sentences.

6. Practise explaining Physics

Some of the most challenging questions don’t involve calculations at all. They ask you to explain why something happens.

Practise writing explanations that use Physics rather than everyday descriptions.

Ask yourself:

What Physics principle explains this?

Then build your explanation logically from that principle.

Look carefully at the number of marks available. A three- or four-mark explanation will usually require more than one Physics statement.

7. Practise graphs and data questions

Don’t neglect graphs, tables and experimental data.

Make sure you can:

    • read values accurately from a graph;
    • calculate a gradient;
    • interpret the meaning of a gradient;
    • identify relationships between quantities;
    • draw an appropriate best-fit line;
    • recognise anomalous results;
    • use data to support a conclusion.

Remember that a graph is not just a mathematical object — in Physics, the gradient and shape of a graph often have a physical meaning.

8. Do complete papers under timed conditions

As the examination gets closer, practise complete papers.

Try to reproduce examination conditions:

    • no notes;
    • no checking answers;
    • no phone;
    • use the correct time limit.

This helps you practise deciding which Physics to use, rather than knowing in advance which topic a question is testing.

Afterwards, mark the paper carefully and identify the topics or types of questions that caused problems.

Then revise those areas before attempting another paper.

9. Make a “mistakes list”

Keep a short record of mistakes that you repeatedly make.

For example:

    • Forgot to convert cm to m.
    • Confused mass and weight.
    • Didn’t use the gradient of the graph.
    • Forgot that resultant force causes acceleration.
    • Didn’t include the unit.
    • Used “energy is used up” instead of describing an energy transfer.

Look through this list before your examination. It is much more useful than rereading everything you already know.

10. In the examination

Read every question carefully and answer the question that has actually been asked.

Underline or notice important command words such as state, describe, explain, calculate, determine, compare and suggest.

For calculations, show your working.

For explanations, use appropriate Physics terminology and make each step in your reasoning clear.

If you are stuck, don’t spend too long on one question. Move on and return to it later.

And finally, never leave a question blank. Write down what you know, an appropriate equation, a relevant Physics principle or some sensible reasoning. You may still earn marks.


A good revision cycle

For each topic:

Review → Recall → Practise → Check → Correct → Repeat

Don’t spend all your revision time reading notes and highlighting things.

The best preparation for answering Physics questions is answering Physics questions.
