2019 Phy Bio Practical Exam Briefing slides

  • Please check email from Mr Ang JL for Class lists indicating your assigned shift and lab allocations for Physics Practical Exams on Mon 16 Sep.

Overview of Conduct of Physics Practical Exams (as briefed):

  1. The Physics Practical Exam paper may have 3 to 4 questions in Sections A and B.
    • One question usually involves Electricity, while other questions may be based on any other topics.
  1. Each bench has 2 students with 2 different sets of apparatus – one for Section A question(s), and one for Section B question(s).

Listen carefully and follow instructions strictly as given by the invigilator!

– First 55 min: One student will start with Section A question(s) and the other student will start with Section B question(s).

Ensure all measurements/observations using the apparatus provided are completed for each section within the given 55 min.

– Changeover (timing is stopped): Each student will rearrange apparatus back to its original state and bring all their materials to the other side of the bench when invigilator gives the instructions.

– Second 55 min: Each student on the new side of the bench will now start with the other Section’s question(s). No returning to the original side of the bench is allowed. Only start when instructions is given.

INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES (on Physics Practical Exam Paper cover)

You will be allowed to work with the apparatus for no more than 55 minutes for each section.

You are expected to record all your observations as soon as these observations are made.

All your answers should be written in the answer sheet in permanent ink; scrap paper should not be used. You may use a pencil for any diagrams or graphs.

At the end of the examination, hand in this Question Booklet.

Arduino Project

Propose an Arduino Project that you can undertake over ~8 lessons.

Your project should make use of Inputs and Outputs on the Arduino.

There are many standard components in the Physics Lab. However,  small components that we do not have in school can be purchased for you. Try to give Mr Shone a list of any additional components that you may need by end of April.

Some ideas for Arduino projects could be:

    • A remote controlled car/robot
    • A moving robot arm
    • A device to measure something (temperature, distance, pressure)
    • A game
    • Display of some useful information
    • A balancing 2 wheeled robot
    • Persistence of vision effect
    • Automation (or warning device) for the home or school
    • Decoration or Display (LEDs)

PR3 – Free-Falling Tennis Ball

When conducting the practical think carefully about the following:

  1. What is the best position to record the time from?
  2. What is the best way to release the ball so that you can drop it from the same position each time?
  3. How many times to repeat readings?
  4. Sow to spread out the readings (approximately) equally over the full range of heights?
  5. How to ensure the tape measure is placed vertically?
  6. What is the precision of the measuring tape? – Make sure you record to this precision.
  7. What is the precision of the stopwatch? – Make sure you record to this precision.

Sec 4 Lessons – Friday, 26 Jan

Mr Shone has still got no voice and so cannot really be teaching a new topic today.

Instead you should do the following:

  1. complete AS 11 if you have not already done so and hand in (through the physics rep)
  2. Revise topic of KINEMATICS (this will be tested in MY exams).

In particular, look through the topics of tabulated data questions and ticker tape questions.

The following notes may be helpful:

Kinematics – Tabulated Data Questions

Kinematics – Ticker Tape Timer

And the questions at the bottom of those pages should help test your understanding.

Still looking for things to do? – you can read up on sound for next week.

MakerSpace Challenges

You were given the following challenges:

Some  of the photos of the teams in action:

  1. Why did you undertake the challenge in the way you did?
  2. If you were to do the same challenge again would you do it in the same way?
  3. In what way were the challenges like a science experiment?
  4. In what way were the challenges different from a science experiment?
