1.4 – Measuring Angles

A protractor should be read to the nearest degree.

In the example below the inclination of the ramp is 38º.

The ramp passes between 37º and 38º – I think it is closer to 38º (zoom in to the photo and see for yourself!), but it would be fine to record it as 37º if you think it is closer to that. However, it should not be recorded as 37.5º.

 

Note the centre point of the protractor often does not lie along the base of the protractor. Notice how such a protractor can still be used to measure the angle of inclination of this plank.

 

Example
What is the reading on the following protractor?

44º

(Recall the protractor is to be used to the nearest 1º.)

44.0º or 44.5º would not be accepted as the precision is not correct for this measuring instrument.
