16.1 – Sources of Electrical Energy

Energy sources are generally classified as either renewable or non-renewable.

Non-renewable Energy Sources

    • Fossil fuels (oil 34%, coal 27%, natural gas 24%)
    • Nuclear energy (4%)

Renewable Energy Sources

    • Hydroelectric energy (7%)
    • Geothermal
    • Solar energy
    • Wind energy

The above percentages are percentages of total worldwide energy usage by type. As you can see the total for renewable energy types is very small (~13% in total). [figures are for 2018]

These sources of energy have varying degrees of impact on our environment.

Singapore uses natural gas as the power source for about 95% of the energy produced. The remainder coming from waste combustion, oil and solar.
