16.4.3 – Dangers of Mains Electricity

Singapore mains at ~230 V is a high voltage which can lead to electrocution and death. Care must always be taken when using electricity.

Large currents could lead to burns.

A current as small as 100 mA through the chest can cause the heart to malfunction.

Damaged insulation

If the outer plastic coating of the wire is cracked of worn the copper wire inside may be exposed. Touching this can lead to an electric shock.

Overheating of cables

Too large a current flowing in a wire will generate heating. It is possible that the plastic insulation of the wire can melt and/or start a fire.

Plugging in many wires into the same socket may cause an
overload
if the appliances use large currents.

Wet / Damp conditions

Water lowers the resistivity of the skin making electric shocks more dangerous.
