1.5 – Measuring Mass

Mass

Definition: Mass
Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in a body (or object).
  • SI unit for mass is kilogram (kg).

Measuring Mass

An electronic balance or a beam balance is used to measure the mass of an object.

In the Physics Labs we will only be using an electronic balance to measure the mass of an object.

When using an electronic balance:

    • Ensure that the balance doesn’t wobble, that all of its feet are firmly planted on the bench. (If not one or
    • Ensure the balance reads zero before taking a reading. (If not then press “TARE” to reset the balance to zero.)
    • Ensure that the units are set to grams (some balances will also measure in ounces).
    • Record all the digits on the display (most balances will have a precision of either 0.01 g or 0.001 g)
