Definition: Distance
Distance is the total length of travel.

d is a commonly used symbol for distance.

It is a scalar quantity, independent of the direction of motion of a body.

Example: distance, d = 5.0 m.

Example
You walk 2 km to school in the morning, then walk 2 km back in the afternoon. What distance have you walked?

You have walked a distance of 4 km.
