4.3 – Balanced & Unbalanced Forces

When forces acting on an object are balanced, there is no resultant force.

When forces acting on an object are unbalanced, there will be a resultant force.

Fnet = resultant force or net force = unbalanced force acting on a body

Consider the following forces acting on a box:
In this example the forces do not balance. There is a stronger force pulling the object to the left than to the right. The object is likely to move to the left.
We say there is a net force (or resulatnt force) of 4 N to the left.

In this case the force pulling to the left is equal to the force pulling to the right. The Forces on the box are balanced.
There is no resultant force on the object.

No forces acting on the box. This is also an example of balanced forces and there is again no resultant force on the object.
