Upthrust
Upthrust is a force that is provided by a fluid displaced by a submerged or floating body.
- Upthrust (or buoyant force) is an upward force exerted by a fluid (liquid or gas) on a body immersed (fully or partially) in the fluid. It opposes the body’s weight.
- Upthrust on a body due to a gas (e.g. air) is usually neglected because it is usually small compared to the weight of the body. However, it cannot be ignored for objects such as hot air balloons or party helium balloons which float due to their upthrust being larger than their weight.
